Test Methods & Conditions
I wore this jacket while fishing throughout the summer in Oklahoma, on mid-summer fishing trips to Michigan, and on a late-summer whitewater rafting and fishing trip in Montana. It’s been through cool, rainy mornings, hot days, stuffed in a suitcase and backpack, and battled the cold river rapids. From bass fishing to trout fishing, this jacket has seen it all.
First Impressions
I was initially skeptical that this jacket would be waterproof because of the quiet outer material. It doesn’t feel like traditional waterproof materials. It’s more pliable and quieter than what I’m used to, which is nice when cast all day. The jacket appeared well-designed and well-made, and it fit back into the storage pouch.

Performance in the Field
This jacket hasn’t failed me, no matter what conditions I faced. Whether I faced surprise early-season Oklahoma thunderstorms, long rainy Michigan summer days, or cold whitewater rapids in Montana. It’s kept my head, arms, and torso comfortable and dry in all these situations, which is what I need while fishing.
I love that I can stuff it into my suitcase, backpack, or boat because it’s so compact. But I can also have it out in seconds when a surprise downpour hits. The hood and cuffs stay put in the wind, so I don’t have to keep fighting them in the wind instead of fishing.
On my trip to the Montana backcountry, I wore it a couple of nights to stay warm. I was super thankful it dried quickly after I wore it on the river. The zippered pockets secure and keep my phone, wallet, and keys dry.
I sweat a little while wearing this jacket, but it still breathes well enough that I don’t sweat excessively on warm rainy days.

After several months of packing, unpacking, and wearing this jacket, it’s held up very well. It shows few signs of wear. The seams have held up well with no visible fraying. I don’t see a reason why this jacket shouldn’t last me multiple years of fishing.

Comfort, Fit, & Mobility
This jacket is very comfortable. I often forgot I was wearing it while on my trips. On the Whitewater webhttps://wildernessgeargrid.com/, it looks like a tighter fit, so I ordered a large, but I probably could’ve gotten away with a medium for a snug fit. However, I like that the large doesn’t restrict my motion at all. I’ve had no issues casting or moving around the boat in the Whitewater Packable Rain Jacket.

Who It’s For & Who Should Skip It
This is a great rain jacket for the traveling angler. Whether you fish from the bank, kayak, or a boat, it’s easy to pack away in a storage compartment or backpack. I used it for bass fishing and trout fishing. It’s also a good option for the non-traveling angler. Stuff it somewhere handy and grab it only when you need it.
If you live in really warm climates, you’ll probably want a lighter rain jacket than this one. Even though it’s breathable and lightweight, it’s still pretty warm and makes me sweat on muggy, hot days.
Value & Price-to-Performance
At $110, the Whitewater Minimalist Packable Rain Jacket is priced very well. I’ve worn more expensive jackets that aren’t as packable, waterproof, or durable as this one. I think it’ll be a challenge to find a better jacket in this price range.
